Indigenous Organic Farm and River Tour

Experience first-hand one of the many bananas plantations inside the indigenous reservation. The owner of the farm is a hard-working woman who manages almost every aspect of the farm alone, because her husband left her for another woman (which is very typical in this culture).
At this farm there are three different types of bananas plant crops, and all of them bear fruit at different times of the year. What this means is this woman’s growing season – and her work – never end.

There are very few organic farms in Central America. Organic growers here earn less than traditional farmers in contrast to many other places in the world. So it’s really nice to encounter farmers who are willing to make the sacrifice in income because of their commitment to the environment, and to the ultimate health benefit of the consumer.

After a walk through the tropical plantation, your guide will take you on a ride in a boat along the Yorkin River, where you will see lots of wildlife and beautiful, tropical flowers.

This tour lasts about 3 hours and includes a delicious indigenous lunch.

How to get there:

You will be taking the public bus from the center of town in Puerto Viejo to a nearby town called Bribri. It departs every hour on the half hour (1:30, 2:30, etc.) and lasts about 30 minutes. Once you arrive in the center of Bribri, you’ll be met by a private driver who will then take you onto the indigenous reservation on to your departure point, the Bambu Cultural Center. Your guide will meet you there and you’ll walk together to the nearby plantation.

What to bring:
  • Walking boots
  • Bug repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • Swimsuit
  • Camera
Price per person: $40

*Please note the cost of public bus is approximately $1 per person each way and is not included in the package price. The cost of the private driver from Bribri to Bambu and back is included in the price. Upon your discretion, you may consider giving a gratuity to your guide and to the taxi driver.
