Indigenous Cultural Center Tour and HikeSpend a couple of hours visiting a traditional indigenous cultural center, take a nature hike through the surrounding area and enjoy a delightful indigenous meal. |
||
Bambu is an admirable and beautiful community located in an accessible part of the Talamanca Indigenous Reservation. Much like other indigenous areas, residents here have little or no means of supporting themselves.
A new project was born in 2006 called “Encuentro de Culturas,” or “Ditso wou” in the native language of Bribri,, which means Cultural Encounters. Due to a generous donation, they were able to build an aqueduct, making them one of the few communities on the reservation with potable water.
This amazing center was designed and built using ancient traditional Bribri methods, and the architecture itself is stunning. Once you are inside the house you’ll experience a strange, peaceful feeling which will make you want to stay forever. It’s truly a tropical paradise!
The guide and chief of the community will introduce you to this magical space and then guide you on a tour throughout the property. Be sure not to miss seeing “Julia,” one of their crocodiles. Yes, there are crocodiles and other interesting animals you may never have seen before. But don’t worry, your indigenous guide will take good care of you and you won’t get very close to any dangerous animals. Not only is this tour the perfect way to experience the indigenous reservation and see some of Costa Rica’s finest wildlife, but it’s a great way to help support the indigenous community members of Bambu. This project helps support more than 20 families in the area through these tours. It’s a true model of how a community can work well together towards the benefit of all members.
This tour lasts about 2 hrs and includes a delicious indigenous lunch.
How to get there: You will be taking the public bus from the center of town in Puerto Viejo to a nearby town called Bribri. It departs every hour on the half hour (1:30, 2:30, etc.) and lasts about 30 minutes. Once you arrive in the center of Bribri, you’ll be met by a private driver who will then take you onto the indigenous reservation directly to the Bambu Cultural Center. What to bring:
*Please note the cost of public bus is approximately $1 per person each way and is not included in the package price. The cost of the private driver from Bribri to Bambu and back is included in the price. Upon your discretion, you may consider giving a gratuity to your guide and to the taxi driver. **An alternative to taking the public bus is to hire a private taxi for $45 round-trip.
