Our Indigenous Cultural Centre and Medicine Man tour will give you the opportunity to learn more about the local Bri Bri culture and meet with Don Cándido, a famed local healer who will teach you about local healing plants and methods. We will visit Centro Cultural Indigena. Their purpose is to preserve the indigenous lifestyle which goes back 5000 years. Today, new generations are losing their connection to the wisdom and wealth of their rich heritage. Don Cándido Morales Morales is the last in a long line of indigenous medicine men and he has undertaken as his mission to preserve this invaluable culture and share this priceless wisdom before his culture is lost for all time. Many years ago the indians used the locally found medicinal plants to cure all manner of sickness and disease. Our objective today is to preserve not only the different medicinal plants of the Talamanca Indian Culture, but the wisdom to know how to use these healing plants and herbs. At the centre there are more than 1500 plants used to cure different illnesses. There is a walking trail where you can see many of these medicinal plants and enjoy close contact with jungle birds and small animals. Also while you are here you can take a treatment with Don Cándido for any illness using nature's own botanical healing system. You can also learn about traditional foods, massage, history and science. The centre also extracts natural dyes from plants to make handicrafts which are for sale and can be taken home as souvenirs of the Talamanca Culture. Full Day Jungle Adventure-Puerto Viejo

Full Day Jungle Adventure-Puerto Viejo We will pick you up at your hotel and drive you to our headquarters in Puerto Viejo. Once here you will meet your guide who will explain the operation of your ATV and give you basic instructions on safety. You then will have a short practice session before starting your adventure tour. We will start our adventure by driving our ATVs about 40 minutes until we get to Carbon River. Then we will leave the ATVs and start a hike in the river surrounded by spectacular landscapes. We will use canyoneering equipment in parts of the hike and will take our time to swim in the natural pools. We will leave the river and hike through the primary forest to get to our next adventure-- tree climbing. Using a harness we will climb 16 meters on a tree to get to a platform where we will start the canopy tour. We will enjoy lunch on one of the platforms. After lunch we will do one of the most adrenaline pumping experiences, the Tarzan swing 16 meters above the ground. We will hike again through the forest to get to a beautiful waterfall where we will do a rappel 20 meters down the waterfall and then make our way back to the ATVs to start our return trip to Puerto Viejo. This is an experience full of adrenaline rushes that you will definitely remember for the rest of your life. River and Sea Kayaking with Rainforest Hike

We will drive to the most beautiful location in the area, Punta Uva . This trip consists of three sections. After a safety briefing we will first embark in a magical sea kayaking journey paralleling a coast full of cliffs, caves, and the most amazing rainforest. Then we will paddle our way up river though gorgeous rainforest where you can expect to spot monkeys, sloth, colorful birds, river turtles, bats and iguanas. Your professional guide will deliver a lot of interesting insights on this wonderful eco system. Back at the beach we will take a nice break to relax, swim and enjoy some nicely presented fresh fruit and snacks before hiking to the great over view at Grape Point. Cahuita Boat, Snorkel and Hiking Trip

Parque Nacional Cahuita has the largest system of Coral Reefs in Costa Rica, including 6 species of coral, a wide range of colorful tropical fishes and the occasional encounter of a harmless reef shark or sting ray. This beach has a horse shoe shape, with the entrance of the park at one end and beautiful Punta Cahuita at the other end. You will be picked up at your hotel and be taken to the village of Cahuita. There the captain and the guide are waiting for you to take you by boat to the coral reef where you are going to snorkeling for two hours in two different points of the National Park. After that we will go back to the beach for a rest and to have a snack with tropical fruits. The little break at the beach is followed by a 1 hour guided hike in this wonderful coastal forest: monkeys, sloths, birds, poison dart frogs, iguanas and other interesting encounters are common. During the hike you will also learn about the history of Cahuita. At the end of the walk, the van will take you back to your Hotel. approx 4 hours

Jaguar Animal Rescue Centre

The Jaguar Rescue Center offers shelter, treatment and protection to ill or wounded wild animals in the South Caribbean area. The Center is run by Sandro, an expert in poisonous snakes, and Encar, a biologist with a vast experience with looking after wild mammals in captivity. Sandro and Encar started the Jaguar Center with the aim of saving the lives of as many animals that come in to the shelter, as well as trying to re-introduce them to their natural habitat, the forests of the South Caribbean. Their house has become a sanctuary for wild animals and they try to accommodate their jungle guests as well as they can: terrariums for the snakes, large spaces for the Congo monkeys to rest in after spending the whole day playing in the garden’s trees, special quarantine cages for the animals arriving seriously injured and also a large supply of medicine and an operating theatre for emergency surgery if necessary.

Chocolate House

Next we will visit an indigenous family where they make chocolate from the Cacao trees growing beside their house. You will learn and see demonstrated the process by which the cacao fruit is transformed into delicious and unique chocolate. You will have an opportunity to purchase some chocolate or other indigenous made handicrafts here. Note the owners of the chocolate house speak very limited English so if you don't speak Spanish your explanation of the process may take the form of a pantomine!

Waterfall

Finally, you and your driver/guide will take a short hike (about 20 minutes through the jungle where you can see local plants and butterflies) to the Volio waterfall, a 12m high waterfall in the Talamanca mountains, where you can swim if you like. Should this waterfall be too dry, we will take you to an other waterfall in the area where you can enjoy swimming in the pristine nature pools. The jaguar animal rescue center and chocolate house are suitable for all fitness levels although they unfortunately are not wheelchair accessible. The waterfall trail is not long but it can be steep and sometimes a little muddy so a adequate fitness level is required. The second waterfall offered is a shorter walk so should you prefer that regardless of the water level, please let us know. Rubber shoes with traction, shorts, insect repellent, bottle of water, money for lunch or snacks. Note: you should not touch the animals if you have applied sunscreen or insect repellent. We recommend you to bring these items with you instead and apply them after the visit with the animal rescue center.

Rain Forest Aerial Tram

Twenty minutes outside of San Jose you will cross the Continental Divide and enter Braulio Carrillo National Park. After a half hour trip through the park, the bus will reach a 1000 acre private reserve of virgin forest. Open-sided vehicles shuttle passengers from the parking area to the Visitor's Center. The shuttle trip provides an introduction to the forest, as visitors pass a small river and numerous tree snags with nesting holes of various birds - the White Hawk is regularly seen here, as well as the Pale-billed Woodpecker and many others. After a quick briefing on canopy exploration and the construction of the tram, visitors divide into smaller groups for a 45 to 90 minute (optional) nature walk with a trained naturalist guide. The trails are well-groomed and provide an excellent introduction to the rain forest. Time now to board the Aerial Tram. The Open-sided cable-cars hold 5 passengers and a guide. The guides are quite knowledgeable about flora and fauna. They'll point out orchids and different species of trees and are quick to identify the calls of the many birds that inhabit this unique environment. The tram ride lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. The lower, outbound leg of the tram journey takes you skimming over hilltops and in and out of the sub-canopy, a dark world of overburdened tree limbs dripping with mosses, ferns, and orchids. Lianas and vines drape over branches and traverse forest spaces, and act as highways for birds and insects. The ride will stop several times as passengers board at either loading station. The return leg of the ride reveals the most dramatic portion of the trip as the cars glide on a breath-taking journey through and above the airy canopy. DAY 1: Upon landing, you'll be transferred to the historic Hotel Don Carlos . Located in the oldest historical section of San Jose. As a one time home for two past Costa Rican presidents, Hotel Don Carlos plays a small but significant part in Costa Rica's rich heritage. Enjoy the rest of the day and evening on your own, exploring this interesting city. DAY 2: Your driver will pick you up after breakfast and transfer you to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. When you arrive at the beach town of Puerto Viejo, your driver will meet you and take you into the Talamanca Indigenous Reservation. We’ll pass through the town of Bribri, which is the main gathering point and shopping area for the indigenous who live in the Talamanca Region. Not far after Bribri, we’ll arrive at the home of our next host, Danilo Gabb in Bambu at the Bambu Cultural Center. This amazing center was designed and built using ancient traditional Bribri methods, and the architecture itself is stunning. Once you are inside the house you’ll experience a strange, peaceful feeling which will make you want to stay forever. It’s truly a tropical paradise! It’s here you’ll be staying for the next couple of nights while you get to know your host, the surrounding area, have a chance to meet other children and families. Today we'll walk to visit the places where we'll be volunteering over the next few days: -- The Bambu Retirement Home -- The Bratsi Elementary School -- The Cultural Center Day 3 Today we go on a Frog Tour: This is a five-hour tour to visit an indigenous farm (40 hectares) owned by Heriberto. On this beautiful hike and visit to see Heriberto, your guide will be pointing out to you green & black, red & black and 4 other types of frogs (and toads too). There are many types of birds (parrots, picotes), butterflies, trees, medicinal plants, mushrooms and flowers. Plus you'll get to see Heriberto's house, made from traditional Bribri indigenous construction materials. Tour includes snack. DAY 4: Today there will be optional volunteering at the Retirement Home, The Bratsi Elementary School and the Cultural Center. We will work together ahead of time to define our projects. One example might be bringing some photos and materials from your hometown and doing a cultural exchange with the students in the school. They could teach you some words in the Bribri language and much about their own culture. At the Retirement Home we can do arts & crafts with the residence, play games, paint fingernails, help them with their chores, and just keep them company. In the Cultural Center we normally give our volunteers the chance to share with the locals about themselves and where they are from, and often dance, play games, teach English, do arts & crafts and get to know one another better. Day 5 We're taking an exciting boat tour to Panama today. We'll ride in a traditional, dug out canoe on the Telire river to the Yorkin River, then walk about 10 minutes into the forest to a beautiful and secluded waterfall. Swim and relax before heading back to Bambu. A truly unique experience! Tortuguero Park, 1 night, 2 days

Tortuguero National Park is the best place in Costa Rica to encounter wildlife; it consists of a large system of waterways irrigating the majority of the Northern Caribbean area of the country. Because of its remote location and difficult access this pristine Rainforest remains virtually untouched and it is home to many animals like sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, trogons, water birds, colourful frogs and butterflies.This National Park is also the prime nesting site for the green and leatherback sea turtles from June to October, during which months an optional turtle nesting night- tour will be available.

On the first day we will drive to the Caño Blanco embarking area where we will access the main canal to go north into the National Park. Upon arrival in our hotel we will enjoy a delicious lunch followed by a visit to the unique Tortuguero village.

On the second day we will embark on a boat trip into the jungle where you will explore the lagoons and hidden canals; as we go deeper into the forest the canals become smaller and the surrounding wildlife gets closer. On the way out we will take part of a guided hike in the south side of the park, where away from the water the trees are very tall, covered with bromeliads, vines and orchids for a great complement to the canal experience.

Back at Caño Blanco we will drive out with the option to be dropped off in San José, Puerto Viejo or La Fortuna.

Tortuga Island Cruise

Definitely an adventure you can’t miss. We depart the city towards the mountains that surround the Central Valley, with spectacular scenery of vegetation and extensive coffee plantations, ornamental plants, pictures of typical towns in Costa Rica. As we ascend, we will enjoy the climate changing.

This is an experience that is enjoyed only once, as we slide from one platform to the next one by flying through the canopy. Canopy San Lorenzo is located in the middle of the tropical forest reserve in a beautiful area full of orchids, bromeliads and other ornamental plants.

The total length of the cable is of 2500 meters or 8.202,10 ft. There are 19 platforms and the San Lorenzo Canopy offers a 750-meter or 2.460,63 feet cable, the longest one in the country.

From one platform to the next, the guide will explain the most important features of the forest. Finally, after only a short walk, we will have a delicious lunch in the restaurant Gran Vista.

We take the Pan-American Highway South, to start ascending the large “Irazu”. The winding road travels through fertile lands cultivated with all kinds of vegetables as we observe a lovely panoramic view. On the top of the volcano you can observe the main craters and on a clear day both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans can be seen. As we descend to the city of Cartago we will stop at the Virgin of the Angels church that according to religious custom is a peregrination site for many believers. After visiting the Church we will stop at Lankester Gardens, a University of Costa Rica Institute for investigation. This place protects more than 800 species of orchids, bromeliads and countless species of other plants. We will continue on to Orosi Valley where the creation overflows in an unparallel beauty. We will be able to visit one of the few remaining colonial churches and stop for lunch in one of the local restaurants. During our tour we will be able to observe “La Casa del Soñador” an example of Costa Rican primitive art.

Starting on the East side of San Jose, the first thing we will see is Democracy Plaza, the National Museum, the National Court, Los Yoses, San Pedro Mall, Hispanidad Fountain and the Rodrigo Facio Campus on the University of Costa Rica.

After we have seen the capital’s main attractions, our first stop will be in the impressive Pre-Columbian Gold Museum and in the beautiful National Theater where we will have a guided visit tour through these cultural gems.

After our visit, the tour continues through the western section of San Jose: La Sabana Metropolitan Park(first International Airport in Costa Rica), Costa Rican Contemporary Art Museum , the National Gymnasium, the Comptroller’s office, the residential area in Rohrmoser, the Nunciatura, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Republic President Oscar Arias Sanchez’s home, the Rohrmoser Boulevard and Pavas section.

At the end of the tour, you will have the opportunity to visit an interesting shopping place where you will be able to buy souvenirs from your visit to San Jose.On Sunday, the National Theater is closed so we will only be able to see it from the outside.

Rafting Reventazon and Florida

It has the hardest commercial runs in the country, as well as the biggest white water. With over 65kms (40 miles) of rapids, it has two different sections to choose from: Pascua and Florida. All of them are one-day trips easily done from San José or the Caribbean Coast. Better yet, why not combine it with another trip, such as Arenal or Tortuguero? The Reventazon is your best choice for late dry season months (March and April). It maintains very good water levels, as other rivers start getting really low. The lush surroundings, abundant bird life and good amount of fun rapids makes this a great introduction to river running. This run is clearly divided in two halves. The first hour is very exciting, with big waves and long rapids. We stop for a first class buffet lunch at the prettiest beach on the river. The second half is more relaxed as the river enters the true lower Caribbean. The surroundings take on a jungle character and the wildlife is more plentiful. At the end we take you to our Exploration Center, where you can change, shower and relax. During rainy months we operate the Sarapiqui, and during drier times, the Reventazon.
